Sudler-Smith moved to Los Angeles in 1996 and made two short films, Going for Baroque and Afternoon Delight. In 1998, he released Bubba and Ike, a “redneck buddy comedy” starring Jesse Borrego and Elisa Gabrielli that premiered at the Austin Film Festival. Smith developed and directed Torture TV in 2002, which starred Danny Huston and Trevor Goddard. He also writes screenplays. Sudler-Smith filmed the documentary Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston in 2010 on Roy Halston, the legendary fashion designer who contributed to the casual chic look. The film centered on Studio 54 and the Manhattan club scene of the 1970s, using archive material and interviews with celebrities such as Anjelica Huston, Billy Joel, Liza Minnelli, and others.
Variety and Entertainment Weekly critic Owen Gleiberman rated the film an A, saying it “has a grander trajectory than just about any other fashion doc.” The film received generally unfavorable reviews and presently has a 33% rating on review aggregator site Rottentomatoes.com. Sudler-Smith is the creator and executive producer of Southern Charm, a Bravo reality show that follows the social scene of Charleston, South Carolina. Sudler-Smith also serves as executive producer for two spin-off shows, Southern Charm Savannah and Southern Charm New Orleans. Sudler-Smith’s mother is the widow of Arthur Goodhart Altschul Sr., a notable New York art collector and philanthropist who was Goldman Sachs’ longtime General Partner. Sudler-Smith is in pre-production on the scripted comedy Family Office.
