Whitney Houston’s New Documentary Special I go to the rock delves into the impact of gospel music on the late singer’s life and career.
The film is presented Friday at the same time as the release of a posthumous album of the same name.
Grammy-winning gospel artist CeCe Winans hosts the special for AspireTV, a network dedicated to black culture and urban lifestyle.
The film’s trailer features archival footage of Houston’s performance, as well as an interview about her faith with Oprah Winfrey.

Houston’s estate announced details of the documentary and accompanying album in February, marking the 11th anniversary of the singer’s death.
“His love for gospel music imbues every song with love, compassion and conviction,” said Houston’s executor Pat Houston at the time.
“To love Whitney is to love what she means to everyone who loves the gospel,” Pat added. “I hope you enjoy this incredible project which was simply a labor of love for everyone involved.”
Whitney Houston died in Beverly Hills on February 11, 2012. She was 48.
The new album includes six previously unreleased songs, some of which were recorded as early as 1981.
The documentary includes footage of Houston performing “I Go to the Rock” with the Georgia Mass Choir on Saturday Night Live in 1996.
There are also performances of his chant “Guide Me O Thou, Great Jehovah” on The Arsenio room show in 1990, and singing “Bridge Over Troubled Water” with CeCe Winans on the VH1 Honors in 1995.
The film I Go to the Rock: The Gospel Music of Whitney Houston is produced by Barry Jennings. The special documentary premieres Friday, March 24 at 8 p.m. ET on UPtv and AspireTV.
