girl in the closet tells the story of a woman who takes in her niece and commits unspeakable crimes.

Based on true events, the Lifetime film follows 10-year-old Cameron, who is taken into the care of her Aunt Mia (Tami Roman), when the child’s mother, Patricia (Remy Ma), suffers an aneurysm.

Mia is a convicted murderer, but unfortunately, overworked social workers neglect her case and give her custody of Cameron.

As the little girl settles into her new home, she begins to hear strange voices coming from the locked basement. Cameron later discovers people chained to the wall – innocent victims of his aunt’s schemes to get rich by cashing their benefit checks. It doesn’t take long before Cameron is locked up herself. Without food or water, only her faith keeps her alive before she is finally saved.

In the clip above, we see Mia (Tami Roman) showing up unannounced at little Cameron’s birthday party. Patricia (Remy Ma), knows that Mia is bad news and tells her to go away.

“You have a lot of nerve showing up here,” Patricia said.

“Why so much venom to someone who bears gifts, Mia said. “I’m his family. I love him too. I mean, nobody’s perfect Patricia.

Mia is far from perfect, and when Patricia falls ill, she seizes the opportunity to collect foster care checks for her niece.

The film also stars Brielle Oliver and Daijah Peters as Cameron at different ages, alongside Danielle LaRoach, Stevie Baggs Jr. and Teisha Speight.

The film is produced by Swirl Films. Abbey MacDonald, Eric Tomosunas, Courtney Miller and Rob Hill are executive producers. Jaira Thomas is directing from a script by Sa’Rah Jones.

girl in the closet premieres Saturday, March 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime.

The film is part of the network’s “Ripped From The Headlines” franchise. Although the story isn’t based on any particular family, some details are similar to the true story of Lauren Kavanaugh, who the media called “The Girl in the Closet.”

Lauren was held captive in the Texas family home from age 2 to 8. She was beaten, tortured and sexually assaulted by her mother and stepfather before help finally arrived. In 2001, a neighbor alerted authorities to the horrors unfolding at Barbara and Kenneth Atkinson’s home and Lauren was eventually rescued. The couple were eventually found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to a child and sentenced to life in prison.

After turning 18, Lauren sat on Dr. Phil to detail her ordeal and said the trauma of what happened still haunts her.
