Gonzales scores 25 points, No. 20 Texas outscores Texas Tech 80-71

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Shaylee Gonzales scored 25 points, Rori Harmon had a double-double, and No. 20 Texas beat Texas Tech 80-71 on Wednesday night.

The Longhorns (19-6, 10-2 Big 12 Conference) held the Lady Raiders (16-8, 4-7) to 39 points in three quarters. The sixth straight win added a quarter to their 17-season run in which they held off a single-digit opponent and fought back from a 68-64 loss at Texas Tech three weeks earlier.

DeYona Gaston scored 16 points And Harmon had 15 with 10 assists for Texas.

Bre’Amber Scott had 26 points, Bryn Gerlich 16 and Bailey Maupin 13 for Texas Tech.

For three quarters, the game revolved around the Texas defense. The Longhorns held Texas Tech with 3-of-8 shooting and eight points in the first quarter to take a 17-8 lead. It was 38-27 at halftime and 55-39 after three quarters.

An 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter gave Texas a 63-41 lead and the gap was still 20 with 6-19 remaining.

The fourth quarter became a foul line stoppage. With 20 fouls, 11 against Texas Tech, the teams combined for 26 of 28 free throws with Texas going 15 of 16. The Longhorns’ final 13 points came from the foul line in the final four minutes.

There were 52 fouls for the game, including 27 on the Longhorns. Texas finished 25 of 32 at the line to 23 of 33 for the Lady Raiders.

The teams also made 36 sales, including 19 from Texas Tech. Texas had a 36-23 rebounding advantage, 16-7 on offense for a 23-8 difference in second-chance points.

Texas takes on TCU at home on Saturday when Kansas visits Texas Tech.

Murray scores 41 points, Nuggets edge Hawks 128-108

DENVER (AP) — Jamal Murray posted a season-high 41 points, Nikola Jokic had his 18th triple-double of the season and the Denver Nuggets won their third straight game, beating the Atlanta Hawks 128-108 on Saturday night .

Jokic finished the tournament with 14 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists, and had the 94th regular season triple-double of his career. Michael Porter Jr. added 23 points for the Nuggets, who were 19-1 in their last 20 home games.

Dejounte Murray scored 28 points to lead the Hawks. De’Andre Hunter added 20 points.

Trailing 18 points at the break, the Hawks cut the deficit to 97-86 early in the fourth quarter after Onyeka Okongwu tipped in the last minute of the third quarter. The Atlanta defense blocked the Nuggets’ last three field goal attempts in the third period.

Jäger’s Knight with 5:49 to play put the Hawks at 109-101. But the Nuggets, led by Murray, responded with a 15-2 run that extended their lead to 124-103 at 2:23. The Hawks never threatened again. Murray had 11 of his points in the late excitement, which Jokic helped start with a go-oop pass to Aaron Gordon for a lay-up for his 10th assist of the game.

Murray had 22 of his points in the first half, including a 3-pointer on a feed from Jokic after an Atlanta turnover in the waning seconds of the second quarter. That gave the Nuggets a 70-52 halftime lead.

Nuggets: Murray’s career high is 50 points at Cleveland ON on Feb. 19, 2021. F Aaron Gordon was back in the starting lineup after missing the previous game with a sprained left ankle. … G Kentavious Caldwell-Pope left the game in the second quarter with a sprained right ankle. He didn’t come back.
