People boycott Frito-Lay in Canada after recent price hike

One of Canada’s largest food and snack makers, Frito-Lay, has again hiked prices at some grocery stores across the country, a change retailers blame on grocery inflation.

The snack conglomerate, which owns brands like Lay’s, Doritos, Ruffles, Cheetos, Sun Chips and Tostitos, introduced a 10% to 11% increase in some stores, according to multiple retailers.

Gary Sands, senior vice-president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers, confirmed that the PepsiCo-owned manufacturer introduced price increases at several of its member stores this week.

Needless to say, Canadian consumers are not happy and many are calling for a boycott of the potato chip brand.

“The timing of the Pepsi-Frito Lay price hike, which comes exactly a week before hearings on price inflation resume in the House of Commons, is good in that it shows once again that many price increases are being imposed on retailers,” Sands said. The globe and the mail.

“For example, if you are an independent grocer [profit] Margins of around two percent and then cost increases such as the double-digit price increases of Pepsi-Frito-Lay simply have to be passed on to consumers. There is no other possibility.

Last year, the potato chip maker stopped supplying products to all Loblaw Companies Ltd. stores. because of a “dispute over price increases”. Frito-Lay stopped ordering from Loblaw stores for several weeks after the latter refused to accept the price increase.

Soaring grocery prices have become the norm amid rising inflation, and retailers say the trend is set to continue.

On Tuesday, Loblaw Companies Ltd. confirmed that the price freeze – which normally runs from November to February – on unbranded products will not be extended as planned.

According to the Canadian Food Prices Report, food prices are expected to increase by 5% to 7% in 2023.

Rising food prices are attributed to food supply chain disruptions, climate change, labor issues, food transportation and, of course, high inflation.

In Pakistan, at least 51 people died after a bus accident and a boat carrying school children capsized

At least 41 people were killed in the crash of a bus that exploded after plunging off a bridge in Pakistan’s southwest, a government representative announced, on Sunday, January 29. .

‘The dead bodies cannot be identified’said Hamza Anjum, an official in Lasbela district of Balochistan province, where the accident took place. Anjum said the three survivors have been rescued. He said the bus was carrying 48 people when it hit a pole before going over the abutment of the bridge it was crossing.

Road accidents are high in Pakistan with bad expressways, poor road safety and dangerous driving. Buses there are often filled to capacity and wearing seat belts is not a widespread practice. Road accidents often happen with a single vehicle. According to the World Health Organisation, more than 27,000 people died on Pakistan’s roads in 2018.

Shortly afterwards, a ship carrying 25 to 30 students on a school trip capsized on Tandam Lake in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (North-West Pakistan) province. Ten children aged between 7 and 14 were found dead and eleven others were rescued, six of whom are in critical condition.
