Shooting inside Florida City Walmart leaves 1 dead, 1 injured, suspect in custody

In a shooting inside a Walmart in Florida City, one person was killed and another was injured.

Police responded quickly and apprehended a person in connection with the incident.

Miami-Dade police took control of the investigation, which took place shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday at the prominent retailer located at 33501 S. Dixie Highway.

As a result of the incident, two people were shot and injured, one in the foot and the other in the abdomen.

Additionally, a third person had a panic attack due to the situation and required medical attention.

Among the victims, one is currently being treated at Jackson South Medical Center. Additionally, it is suspected that one of the people involved in the incident is a Walmart employee.

Later, authorities verified that one of the victims had succumbed to his injuries and arrested a person in connection with the incident.

MDPD detective Alvaro Zabaleta held a press conference on Wednesday evening, providing additional information on the situation.

He said: “What we know is that there was a confrontation between two groups. Within these groups, three individuals on each side were involved in some form of altercation with each other. The situation escalated into a physical altercation, during which an individual pulled out a firearm and discharged it, resulting in the injury of both individuals.

Zabaleta said the surviving victim is listed in stable condition.

Police spent approximately 45 minutes clearing Walmart’s premises. Meanwhile, several witnesses were seen waiting outside the store.

According to the police, at first, three suspects were seen leaving the area. Authorities are actively gathering more information and securing the scene for further investigation.

In response to the incident, Walmart released the following statement:

We are deeply saddened by what happened at our Florida City store, and our hearts go out to the loved ones of the victim. The store is currently closed. We will work closely with local law enforcement throughout their investigation and refer other matters to the police.

On Wednesday evening, the store remained closed and there is no indication at this time when it will reopen.
