In Sobe Community, Owan West Local Government Area in Edo State, alleged herders reportedly killed a driver, identified as Ome Osesa, and injured others in another attack. This recent attack marks the seventh time the community has been targeted, resulting in the loss of five lives, including a pastor and his two workers.
According to Punch, the assailants invaded Osesa’s house on Monday evening March 27 and opened fire on him and others present. Shepherds also abducted several people near St. Thomas Moore Elementary School. Unfortunately, the community is all too familiar with these attacks, which seem to be on the rise.
The community source who confirmed the Punch incident said “the rate of murder by herders in the community of Sobe in Owan West Local Government has become too high”. The source added that people did not receive timely help during or after the attacks.
Residents called on Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki to liaise with the federal government to establish a mini barracks in the community before it becomes a “graveyard”. It seems that the new police headquarters created in the community was not enough to prevent attacks on the community.
Angry youths in the community have taken to protesting the relentless attacks and killings. On Tuesday morning March 28, they blocked the Benin-Akure highway to express their frustration and call for action.
In conclusion, the persistent attacks by herdsmen in Sobe community and other parts of Edo State continue to pose a significant threat to the safety and well-being of residents. The government must take urgent action to ensure that the community and its people are safe from these attacks. It is time for the government to address this issue with the seriousness and urgency it deserves.
