Saskatchewan, eight years old. Boy fatally hit by school bus

A child has died after an incident involving a school bus on Red Earth Cree Nation, police say.

The incident happened around 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, according to an RCMP news release.

Initial police investigation revealed the school bus had pulled over to let the 8-year-old boy go, RCMP said.

“The child got out of the bus and started walking in the same direction as the bus. The child was then struck by the bus,” RCMP said.

Police and EMS provided first aid to the child. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The boy’s family has been notified and victim services have been made available, police said.

No one else was injured in the incident, police said the bus driver remained at the scene and has not been charged at this time.

The police continue to investigate.

Red Earth is located 360 kilometers northeast of Saskatoon.

The community was hit hard nearly a year ago when 5-year-old Frank Young went missing.

The boy’s body was found in a river that runs through the community after an 81-day search.
