Following Disney’s lawsuit against fellow Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida has issued a warning to politicians against being seen as suing companies for “political gain”.

Thursday’s Fox News interview with Rubio included questions about the legal dispute between DeSantis and Disney over the latter’s unique standalone rights in the state. Fox anchor Brian Kilmeade asked Rubio about comments made by other Republicans criticizing DeSantis for singling out the company.

“I have no problem going up against Disney,” Rubio said. The main question, in my opinion, is whether or not Disney had a deal that granted them government-like authority. If so, I believe it was a very appropriate thing to do.

He added, however, “I think where it gets problematic in some people’s eyes is when you start creating the idea – and I’m not saying we’re there yet as a state – but the idea that somehow, like, if you politically cross paths with us, whoever’s in charge, then, you know, you can end up in the crosshairs of the legislature for political purposes to make a statement.”

Disney filed a lawsuit against DeSantis on Wednesday, alleging the governor was trying to “weaponize the power of government” by suing the company. DeSantis is generally expected to run for president.

Disney Parks and Resorts US, Inc. said in its complaint that DeSantis’ actions “threaten Disney’s business operations, jeopardize its economic future in the region, and violate its constitutional rights.”

The court ruling follows a year-long feud that saw Disney oppose the state’s “Don’t Say Gay” law and DeSantis stripped Disney World of its autonomy in February.

In the Fox News interview, Rubio refuted any claims that Disney might leave Florida as a direct result, but he said a repeat of that lawsuit could cause companies to leave the state.

“I’m concerned that if this happens too frequently, companies considering moving to Florida will decide against it because they fear that if they engage them in a political storm, they will target their business.”

But Rubio said he doesn’t believe Disney will leave Florida as far as the state is concerned. They’ve put a lot of effort and money into it, and I think it will show.
