Shortly before he was killed in a drive-by shooting in Houston last week, rapper BTB Savage received threats from someone saying he was going to “make his mom cry.”
The rapper’s grief-stricken mother opened up about the circumstances leading up to his death in an April 3 interview with Houston television station ABC13.
BTB Savage, whose birth name was Darrell Gentry, was shot on Thursday, March 30.
The shooting happened just hours after he pictures posted on Instagram and Twitter of the blood-splattered scene where he said he and his girlfriend killed a would-be thief in self-defense.

The rapper’s mother, Bernita Ward, said she told her son to remove the photos, but her pleas were ignored.
“I said, ‘Take that off social media,'” Ward recalled. “May this family mourn in peace. They laughed at my son, however, telling him they were going to kill the family, make his mom cry and kill his son. I said to my son, ‘Don’t answer.’
In a March 26 interview with DJ Vlad, BTB Savage said he and his girlfriend killed a man who tried to rob him.
The rapper said he met two men to discuss working on a song together. According to BTB, one of the men pretended to have forgotten something and walked out. The other man asked about a chain BTB was wearing and an argument broke out.
“I see you flexing on Instagram,” he recalled saying, referring to photos like the one above that BTB posted on Instagram of himself holding stacks of cash and wearing flashy jewelry.
The 26-year-old rapper said the man pulled out “two guns”. The would-be thief shot him and BTB’s arm was injured. BTB yelled at his girlfriend to shoot the man. The rapper told DJ Vlad that the thief was begging for help, but he told the suspect, “I don’t give a damn about you. You are going to die.”
BTB said he yelled at his girlfriend to shoot the man. “She punched him twice in the back,” he said in the now-viral interview.
The rapper’s mother provided additional details about the attempted robbery, saying it happened at her son’s apartment in San Antonio in February. She said she was sure he was killed in retaliation for the February incident.
“The moral of this story is that two mothers lost two amazing sons and their children would be raised without a father,” Ward said. “That’s the saddest thing.”
She added that BTB has served in the military before and leaves behind a 4-year-old son.
Urban Hollywood 411 spoke with the Houston Police Department on Monday. A police spokesperson said investigators are still looking for the suspects who ambushed the rapper as he walked through the 2100 block of Mid Lane on the evening of March 30. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Police say a black Subaru SUV with two suspects inside arrived, opened fire, then drove away “at high speed”. The FBI is assisting the Houston police in the investigation.
