Oyo SDP gubernatorial candidate resigns for Makinde

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) gubernatorial candidate in Oyo State, Michael Lana, has resigned for Governor Seyi Makinde ahead of this weekend’s gubernatorial election in the state.

Lana announced her intention to step down from the gubernatorial race at a Tuesday press conference in Ibadan.

The SDP candidate’s adoption of Makinde came after his party leaders adopted the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial flag bearer, Teslim Folarin.

Lana, a former attorney general and justice commissioner of Oyo state, said he had informed the people of the state that the action he takes would be determined by all SDP candidates, especially those who are vying for seats in the House of Assembly.

He said, “After several consultations, we have decided that the best thing for Oyo State at this time is to align ourselves with a truly progressive candidate.”

The former commissioner said he was motivated by an emotional statement from a 70-year-old woman who said Makinde paid her pensions quickly and cared for the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is the trait of a person who has set out to write his name in history and to uplift the oppressed in our state.

“After talking with him, we decided that Makinde needs the help of all capable hands inside and outside Oyo State to achieve his dreams for our state.

“We have therefore decided to inform all our many supporters to vote overwhelmingly for Governor Seyi Makinde of the PDP on Saturday, March 18 and have him elected Governor of Oyo State,” he added.
