It would be hypocritical of me to expect other people to instantly digest information that has taken me countless hours of therapy and lived experience.
Transition is a journey and a slow one at that. I came out to the most important people in my life three years ago, not with a declaration of intent but with buckets of tears and a panic attack. Part of me hoped that talking about dysphoria might finally drive it away. Another part expected the world to stop.

Nicky is a football writer and broadcaster, contributing to The Guardian, ESPN, BT Sport, Talksport, BBC Radio 5Live, The Score and Bleacher Report – among others. She previously wrote under the name Paolo Bandini and her areas of expertise include Italian football, English football and the NFL.
