It was released in August 2019. In a video posted to Twitter, the Serie A pundit said: “The thing you need to know is that nothing much changes when it comes to my job. I will always cover Italian football, European football and hopefully a bit of the NFL.

Nicky added: “I know this sentence is going to shock a lot of people. Even after struggling with gender dysphoria – a feeling of discomfort and dissociation from the body that life has given me and the expectations that come with it – for most of my life, it’s taken me the best part of three and a half decades to be able to say it out loud.

It is there, however, in black and white. I wrote my last article under the name of Paolo Bandini. From now on it will be Nicky.

It’s normal to find this confusing. It doesn’t matter if it takes time for people who know me or have followed my work to remember the new name or if I use the pronouns her and her for me. It would be hypocritical of me to expect other people to instantly digest information that has taken me countless hours of therapy and lived experience.

Transition is a journey and a slow one at that. I came out to the most important people in my life three years ago, not with a declaration of intent but with buckets of tears and a panic attack. Part of me hoped that talking about dysphoria might finally drive it away. Another part expected the world to stop.
