And how will that affect Patrick Kane, who wasn’t particularly thrilled to hear about the deal? Is Timo Meier likely the next big name to be deferred before the NHL’s trade deadline?
Canucks respond to Demko calls
According to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, the Canucks are in trade talks with Thatcher Demko and there is interest. She writes: “According to sources, at least four teams have called Vancouver to request the availability of Demko – and the Canucks have not said no to any of those teams.”

Although Demko is injured, the interest will only increase if he comes back and plays well. Kaplan noted, “So this is a situation that needs to be watched, but not necessarily imminent.” The Canucks continue to be a team to watch as the deadline approaches. Names like Luke Schenn, Connor Garland, Brock Boeser and Demko are all hovering around the rumor mill.
Blues focus on moving O’Reilly and Barbashev
After Andy Strickland, now that Vladimir Tarasenko has been transferred, the Blues will focus on moving other games, and selling Tarasenko was not just about keeping a promise, trying to ship it. Strickland writes, “Doug Armstrong had the toughest trade and can now just focus on guys like Barabashev, O’Reilly, Acciari, etc…. The others, who would have been transferred, have no protection and do not present the same challenges that he encountered with Tarasenko.
Latest news and highlights
Pierre LeBrun wrote in a recent article for The Athletic: “General manager Doug Armstrong signaled to his fellow league general managers a few weeks ago that he was open for business. LeBrun adds that it was important for the Blues to do it now. He explains:
The other smart thing the Blues have done here is to complete a deal with Tarasenko as soon as possible. The added complication of forcing the player to rescind their non-trade is not something you want to pin down around March 3. So many things can go wrong that day. Potential trades on past timeframes have been canceled by this very thing.

He thinks a trade with Ryan O’Reilly could go straight into the money.
Kane unhappy with Tarasenko trade
Although Patrick Kane didn’t tell the Chicago Blackhawks he was ready to be traded, Patrick Kane told the media he was upset to hear Tarasenko was going to the Rangers. He said“Not the happiest I’ve ever heard of a trade. … When things come up, this was a team I was definitely looking at. Looks like they’ve filled their void and made a deal. Now that Rangers are out of the running, what is Kane going to consider?
Mark Lazerus adds, “Obviously you want to do justice to the franchise and the organization here has been amazing for me and has given me so much. So they definitely want the best for both parties. This seems to indicate that he will look at other options to try to make it work for Chicago, but will be limited to who he considers.
Meier could be the next big name to move
LeBrun wonders if Timo Meier will be the next big business name to come off the board. He wrote: “There is enough interest in Timo Meier that it may not be a trade either (Rangers have always been so involved here).
He notes that there’s no point in waiting for interested teams, especially given the possibility that the team will want to find an extension for the winger, who has the complication of a $10m qualifying offer. to defend its RFA rights to retain. Once the Sharks give the teams permission to talk about an extension (which they haven’t done yet), trade talks should really heat up and a deal could materialize quickly. LeBrun notes, “New Jersey and Carolina, as we’ve previously reported, are very interested, but the reality is multiple teams have expressed interest.”
