Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown has died aged 87.

One of the finest athletes in professional football history, Brown was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 1965 and broke numerous league records during his brief career, which spanned from 1957 to 1965.

Brown’s wife, Monique, was by his side when he passed away quietly Thursday night at their Los Angeles home, according to a family spokeswoman.

After guiding the Cleveland Browns to their final NFL championship in 1964, Brown took early retirement to pursue an acting career. He made appearances in over 30 movies, such as “Any Given Sunday” and “The Dirty Dozen.”

Brown was a powerful, fast, and resilient runner who was also a well-known figure in the black community during the civil rights struggle in the 1960s. After his retirement, he devoted a significant portion of his time to various charitable projects.
