My agent told me to dye my hair and get my nose done for the roles.
Rosie Perez says an agent once advised her to drastically change her appearance to look more Caucasian.
“She told me if I dye my hair blonde and get my nose done, ‘I can get you more jobs.’ Because you’re not black,” the 58-year-old Latina actress told Variety in a recent interview. “I couldn’t believe it. I thought, ‘Oh my God,’ like, ‘ thanks, fired.”
Soon after, the reality of his decision became reality.
“I had no one, I had no money,” she said.
The Do The Right Thing actress, however, found an ally in In Criminal Justice co-star Jennifer Grey, who immediately called her own agent after hearing the agent’s advice.
“Jennifer and I clicked immediately,” the Perez alum said. “I haven’t seen this woman in ages, but I think she’s phenomenal. He says, “I can’t believe how racist this industry is.” He picks up the phone and calls Jane Berliner from CAA and says, “You have to represent this actress.”
Berliner signed Perez and helped her land two career-changing roles.
The first was Woody Harrelson’s girlfriend in White Men Can’t Jump, a role originally written for a white woman.

“It was just a magical summer,” Perez recalled, alongside Harrelson and Wesley Snipes. “And when you scroll down on your TV to see what you want to watch and March Madness comes on, and then ‘White Men Can’t Jump’ comes on, you can’t help but watch.”
This opportunity led to Peter Weir’s Fearless, in which again the studio wanted to play a white woman.
Despite studio pressure, Weir and Jeff Bridges, who played Max Klein in the 1993 drama, held on.
Perez’s performance as the grieving mother of Carla Rodrigo earned her an Oscar nomination.
And while she’s a member of the Academy, the actress revealed in 2021 that she hasn’t been invited back since her nomination in 1994.
“Not even sitting in the audience, no presentation, nothing — and I’m a member,” she told Variety. “I love the Oscars. I cheer on my peers, but it hurts. It’s like the home team doesn’t ask you to come back to the stadium after you get up to hit and hit a home run.
However, she was invited to the Oscars the following year to present the award with With Snipes and Harrelson.
Despite the drama earlier in his career, Perez continued to star in films such as “Pineapple Express.”
She was also chosen to host “The View”, however, she left The talk show after just one season for reasons she didn’t want to talk about.
“I shouldn’t talk about it,” she told Variety. “Let’s just say what I thought was there was supposed to be something that turned me on, and then when I got there, it wasn’t.”
Sitting in the panel, an unnamed executive told Variety that Perez couldn’t read the teleprompter, prompting Latino leaders to demand an apology.
Additionally, Barbara Fedida, an ABC executive who oversaw the show during Perez’s tenure, was fired in 2020 for making racially insensitive comments about “Good Moning America” anchor Robin. Roberts, who is a black woman.
Perez declined to comment, simply saying, “I’m not going.”
The intern star currently starring on “Your Honor” will be honored next month at Variety’s Power of Women event along with Natasha Lyonne, Kelly Ripa, Michaela Jae Rodriguez and author Judy Blume.
