Madonna took the stage at the awards show on Sunday night to introduce Sam Smith and Kim Petras as they performed their hit song Unholy. The pair’s stunning performance had viewers saying more about Madonna’s face, with many taking to social media to question the cosmetic work she had done. The focus on Madonna’s face has reignited conversations about the pressure women face to conform to society’s beauty standards.
Following the backlash, Madonna herself took to social media to speak out against the hate she had received. “Once again I have fallen into the sliver of ageism and misogyny that pervades the world we live in.” She says. “A world that refuses to celebrate women over 45 and feels the need to punish them if they continue to be willful, hardworking and adventurous.”
Madonna continued: “I’ve never apologized for any creative choices I’ve made, or how I look or dress, and I won’t start. I’ve been belittled by the media since the beginning of my career, but I understand that this is all just a test and I look forward to leading the way to make it easier for all the women behind me in the years to come.
Madonna’s reaction was hailed by fans and celebrity friends, including Man! Shania, singer of I Feel Like A Woman. “She [Madonna] didn’t seem too bothered by the reviews – or described as not bothered,” she told ITV News.
“I think it’s her free spirit and she can just watch whatever she wants. Yeah, I think there’s enough criticism in the world. Shania continued. “It’s good to feel good about yourself, no matter what. That’s definitely how I feel.
The singer continued: “I’m finally good about myself – I’m sure I won’t pay too much attention to the criticism. I won’t let that bother me. Not now. Life just gets shorter, doesn’t it? »
