LETTER: The Green Group encourages Langley residents to use electrical appliances

Dear Editor,

At Fraser Valley Climate Action, we write to encourage your readers to replace their gas water heaters and stoves with electric heat pumps. This small change can have a big impact on reducing pollution and fighting climate change.

Gas water heaters and furnaces are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. They release carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere, which contributes to global warming and climate change. Electric heat pumps, on the other hand, are a clean and efficient alternative. They heat and cool your home electrically and emit no pollutants.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, electric heat pumps are also comparable in terms of operating costs. Plus, because BC’s electricity is 97% renewable, we can be sure we’re using more sustainable energy.

We understand that replacing gas appliances with electric heat pumps can seem like a big undertaking, but many of your readers are already planning to replace their heating or hot water tank in the next few years. We want them to commit to making their next unit an electric heat pump model. In addition, the federal and provincial governments offer rebates of up to $11,000 for change. There are many certified contractors who can help with the installation.

We hope your readers will consider switching to electric heat pumps. It’s a practical change that can have a major impact on reducing pollution and fighting climate change. We are all in this together, and for some people this will be a big change for the better.
