Hawkins received a full scholarship to Illinois State University, where he majored in theater arts. In his first college play, he played Toledo in August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. While still in college, he landed his first major film role in the biopic The Express: The Ernie Davis Story, playing Davis’ bandmate Art Baker. He took a year and a half off school and returned in 2007. He is a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. He graduated in 2012. Hawkins has previously appeared on several TV shows, including HBO’s Ballers, TBS’s Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, MTV’s Underemployed and ABC’s Detroit 1-8-7.
