John Ahlers Career
Ahler began his broadcasting career with the Michigan State Spartans and Colorado College Tigers men’s hockey teams, as well as the Salt Lake Golden Eagles and Louisville IceHawks. Ahlers was the television and radio voice of the Detroit Vipers for five seasons. He also called the IHL Game of the Week and the Turner Cup Finals for Fox Sports Net at the time. He won the IHL Broadcaster of the Year award in 1995 and two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sports Broadcasting in 1995 and 1998 while with the Vipers. Ahlers joined the Tampa Bay Lightning and worked as a play-by-play radio announcer until 2002. He also hosted Lightning’s pre-game television show and Lightning Weekly, a magazine-format show that aired on the Sunshine Network.
For the 2002–03 NHL season, Ahlers joined the Duck’s television broadcasts, working alongside longtime Ducks commentator Brian Hayward. In 2003, he won the Emmy for Best Live Sports Broadcasting in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Detroit Red Wings. He also worked as an announcer for Versus during NHL games. Ahlers was named permanent host of GSN’s Poker Royale in 2005. Before the show ended in December 2005, he hosted six tournaments in the series. He started working as a college football announcer for Sports USA in 2012.
