Hephner began his Hollywood career with supporting roles in two feature films, Tigerland (2000) and Maid in Manhattan (2002). After appearing on the short-lived Fox series The Jury in 2004, he appeared on the NBC series Law & Order: Criminal Intent in Season 4: Episode 21 titled “The Unblinking Eye” in 2005. Hephner played author Pat Conroy in The Water Is Wide (2006), a Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie based on Conroy’s book and a remake of the 1974 drama Conrack. He appeared on The CW’s Easy Money, which aired for four episodes before to be canceled in October 2008. The remaining four episodes aired in mid-2009. Following the cancellation of Easy Money, Hephner appeared in Private Practice, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, NCIS, and Castle as a guest star.
Hephner took over from Ben Browder as football coach Red Raymond on the CW series Hellcats. Hephner was cast in the NBC series The Playboy Club but was replaced before filming began by Eddie Cibrian. In the Starz political drama series Boss, Hephner portrayed Ben Zajac. Hephner appeared in the second season of the NBC drama Chicago Fire from 2013 to 2014. Hephner starred in the TNT series Agent X with Sharon Stone in 2015. Hephner reprized his role as Jeff Clarke in the medical spin-off Chicago Fire from Chicago Med from 2016 to 2017, during which Clarke returns to medical school. He made a guest appearance in the first season finale and remained on the show until the end of the second season.
