Tickets for Jane Mortifee at the Inlet Theater (100 Newport Dr., Port Moody) on Saturday, February 18 are available through eventbrite.ca. The concert starts at 7 p.m.
Jane Mortifee is having a great day: yoga, massage, work and theater tonight.
“I’m living my best life,” said the singer, Vancouver-born actor and BC Entertainment Hall of Fame inductee.
Just before the pandemic, Mortifee launched his first novel titled Fire.
Now that artist restrictions have been lifted, she’s back on the road with a 2023 gig at Port Moody’s Inlet Theater as part of Bill Sample and Darlene Cooper’s Inlet Theater Music Series.
The show – featuring Sample on keyboards/vocals, Cooper on vocals, Tim Porter on guitar, Miles Foxx-Hill on bass and Randall Still on drums – will be followed by two more concerts in Vancouver in March and a new CD in the fall.
The recording will be a mix of ballads” and some of the ‘great’ tunes I’ll probably do at the Port Moody gig,” she said, adding, “I’ve wanted to do a CD for years, but I’ I often change the songs because I’m in a different place and I start singing different songs depending on where I’m at in my life.
However, she does have a set list for the Port Moody show: “Put A Woman in Charge” by Keb’ Mo’, “Compared To What” covered by Roberta Flack, and “Love Sneakin’ Up On You” by Bonnie Raitt will be executed.
Mortifee said she would modify her program depending on the location. Last November, she performed a show with Sample and Cooper for 30 people in a small suite in Port Moody “that has a different energy than a theater.”
“In theater there are more catchy songs because it’s so much bigger space that you can fill musically.”
Mortifee said she met Sample in the 1970s while performing in projects in Vancouver and Victoria.
She sang on the Variety Club telethons, where Sample served as musical director for a decade. And he’s been Mortifee’s musical director for 25 years, working dates, arranging music and leading bands.
In the 1970s and 1980s, “it was a pretty tight-knit community [in the performing arts industry]. We’ve all played gigs and been in bands, so Bill and I have known each other for a long time.
She added: “I think it’s so wonderful what Bill and Darlene created there. [in Port Moody] with the Inlet Theater musical series. It gives people the opportunity to sit down and listen to great music.
Sample replied, “Jane Mortifee has a voice that can be powerful and full of drama, but she can also sing with tenderness and pure emotion. We are delighted to present her at the Inlet Theater with her world-class band, four of which are from Port Moody.
