Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) says “both sides” are to blame after former President Donald Trump glorified the defendants on Jan. 6 at a rally in Waco, Texas over the weekend .

In an interview on CBS News, host Margaret Brennan highlighted the
Gathering Saturday in Waco.

“When he came on stage, he played a recording made by some of those being sued for attacking the Capitol on January 6th,” Brennan said. “He also had images that seemed to glorify the attack that day. He’s calling for protests. He said things like death and destruction if charged.”

“I know you guys have supported him in the past,” she added. “Do you support statements like this?

“Listen, January 6 was a terrible day. We have to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Gonzales replied. “But it was great to have President Trump back in Texas. And it was a reminder that Trump’s policies, President Trump’s policies worked. Right now we’re in a time where Biden is letting us fall. And so, I welcome any serious presidential candidate to come to Texas, see it firsthand.”

“But what the former president was talking about wasn’t politics or substance,” Brennan shot back. “Don’t you see a danger in worshiping those who are being sued for breaking the law and attacking where you and other legislators work? Isn’t that something to think about?”

“The rhetoric is absolutely out of control,” Gonzales insisted. “Both sides, all sides.

“But I would also see, you know, I see President Trump being honestly attacked, demonized on all these different fronts,” he continued. You know, things that happen to him regarding classified documentation, similar things happen to President Biden. You don’t see these things.”

Brennan pressed Gonzales on her support for Trump.

“Is that a line you think you can’t cross when it comes to criticizing what the former president did in targeting the January 6 attacks?” she says.

“I will always fight for what I believe is right,” Gonzales said. “And what I’m seeing right now is people are tired of the environment that’s going on. They’re tired of the rhetoric. They’re tired of the inflation. They’re tired of the border crisis. They are fed up with national security policy. And they want concrete action.

“And whoever delivers this for them will get their vote, whether it’s President Trump or anybody else,” he concluded.
