Zeldin’s support is significant as he previously appeared with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) as part of DeSantis’ book tour in April, and he reportedly planned to support the governor when he entered the 2024 campaign.
Since 2015, Zeldin has served as a congressman for a significant portion of Long Island. Additionally, he campaigned for governor of New York as a Republican last year. In the traditionally Democratic state, he lost to incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul (D), but pundits said Zeldin’s effective campaign helped other candidates win.
In New York, DeSantis solicited Zeldin in October.
Zeldin thought of seeking out the chairman of the Republican National Committee after his election as governor. He ultimately decided against it, citing RNC procedures that favored Ronna McDaniel, the current president.
Zeldin is the most common of a line of elected Republicans to back Trump in recent weeks as part of the former president’s campaign. Trump received support from a number of Florida lawmakers last week, which also turned out to be DeSantis’ trip to Washington, D.C.
