According to KTVU Fox 2, a Home Depot employee was fatally shot on Tuesday while trying to thwart a suspected robbery at the Pleasanton, California store.

According to KTVU Fox 2, the victim, Blake Mohs, 26, worked as a loss prevention employee at the California retail site. According to the publication, he was characterized by friends as an engaged scout leader.

After receiving a call about a bleeding man inside the Home Depot store, Pleasanton police helped Mohs. Mohs was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died of his injuries, authorities say, ABC 7 News reported.

According to witnesses cited by the police, Mohs approached a female suspect who allegedly resisted and shot him. According to ABC 7 News, suspect Benicia Knapps, 32, escaped in a getaway car driven by suspect David Guillory while Knapp’s toddler was inside. Deputies from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office managed to capture the two individuals and a firearm was found at a nearby intersection.

According to KTVU, Knapps allegedly attempted to take an electrical device, presumably a charger, and was “determined to get out without paying,” according to Pleasanton Police Lt. Erik Silacci. As he often reported thefts to the department, Mohs was well known to Pleasanton police, according to Silacci. The victim was a “precious, valued” contributor to the community, Silacci said.

The Home Depot released a statement that read, “We are heartbroken by this senseless tragedy,” according to ABC 7. Blake was a colleague and friend of ours, and we extend our condolences to his loved ones and family.
