According to a Tampa police press release Saturday, Joseph Killins, 38, has been charged with kidnapping with a gun, robbery with a handgun, sexual assault with a weapon and aggravated assault with a weapon.
The victim, in his 20s, had left his vehicle to make a delivery when the incident happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday at a Residence Inn hotel, police said.
According to police, the man approached her with a gun, forced her back into his vehicle and ordered her to Belara Lakes Apartments, where he sexually assaulted her.
The woman was wearing her AirPods and talking on the phone with her girlfriend when she was abducted and assaulted, police say. His girlfriend was aware of what was going on. The victim’s relatives notified the police, who then used the victim’s phone to locate him.
The victim was pulled from his vehicle when the family arrived at the apartment complex, police said, but the suspect opened fire on them as they did so. Police say a lady in her twenties who is related to the victim’s girlfriend was shot dead.
The suspect then escaped the area.
Authorities said both victims were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Additionally, police have provided details of a second crime Killins is accused of committing on Wednesday, the morning after the DoorDash driver was assaulted, still at the Belara Lakes resort. A lady in her 40s was attacked during this event and her bag was taken away.
Killins was eventually located at the Tampa Inn by detectives pursuing both cases, and there he was arrested Friday night.
