In Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, he plays J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter. J’onn J’onzz, also known as the Martian Manhunter, is one of the planet’s remaining Green Martians. J’onn, who was born and reared on Mars, was assumed to be the solitary survivor of a “Martian Holocaust” perpetrated by White Martians, which also slaughtered his entire family. J’onn fled to Earth and hid for decades until being discovered by D.E.O. Director Hank Henshaw. Following Jeremiah Danvers’ apparent sacrifice to save J’onn from Henshaw, the Martian began acting as Director to reconstitute the D.E.O. for its true purpose, enlisting Jeremiah’s daughter, Alex Danvers, and eventually Kara Danvers/Supergirl.

J’onn was eventually compelled to confess his true identity and became a fugitive. However, after supporting Supergirl in defeating Non and Indigo, J’onn earned a full presidential pardon from Olivia Marsdin and was reinstated as director of the D.E.O., continuing to utilize Hank’s look for convenience. J’onn was eventually determined to be not the last Green Martian, as his father, M’yrnn J’onzz, also lived and was imprisoned for approximately 300 years. J’onn departed the D.E.O. after his father was killed by the Worldkillers, and Alex was appointed to the role of Director. He eventually established an investigative firm and worked as a private investigator under the anglicised variant of his name: John Jones.

David Harewood Supergirl

In Supergirl, he played Hank Henshaw/Cyborg Superman. Hank Henshaw is a former D.E.O. director. Henshaw was a paranoid and merciless spy who considered all aliens, whether fugitives or refugees, as a threat and intended to kill them all. Henshaw blackmailed Kara Zor-El’s foster father, Jeremiah Danvers, into working for him so he could learn about Kryptonians. Henshaw trapped alien refugee J’onn J’onzz in Peru after years of seeking him, but Jeremiah seemingly sacrificed his life to kill Hank in order to protect J’onn.

After his alleged death, J’onn impersonated him in order to restructure the D.E.O. for its intended purpose until his identity was revealed, but J’onn was granted a presidential pardon and continued to be director of the D.E.O. J’onn continued to utilize Henshaw’s appearance in public and around D.E.O. agents for convenience.

After being thought to be dead for nearly a decade, Henshaw was discovered to be alive, rescued by Project Cadmus, and genetically changed into a cyborg with strength greater than even Supergirl’s, dubbed “Cyborg Superman.”
