A Calgary councilman facing a mischief charge could avoid a criminal record after an agreement to put alternative measures in place on Wednesday.
Ward County 9. Gian-Carlo Carra has been charged with mischief under $5,000, stemming from an alleged road rage incident last April in which the councilman said he kicked a vehicle who nearly hit his dog in a crosswalk.
Pawel Milczarek, Carra’s attorney, told Global News on Wednesday that the case had been referred to the adult alternative measures program.
“There is no admission of liability on the court record,” Milczarek said. “It’s just a process where you make a certain list of things at the discretion of the probation officer, and once that’s done the charges are dropped.”
While the measures have not been determined, Milczarek said they typically include community service, a letter of apology or compensation for property damage.

If Carra completes probation, her charge would be dropped on September 15.

“A number of resolution options are being explored between the attorneys and the prosecution,” Milczarek said. “If we can agree on something, then obviously nobody wants a case to go through the criminal justice system all the way if it’s not necessary.”
The charges against Carra were laid in December 2022 after the investigation was turned over to the Edmonton Police Department, to avoid conflict with Calgary police.
Carra was a member of the Calgary Police Commission at the time; a role he has since stepped down from.
“I am shocked by these accusations and intend to fight them,” Carra said in a statement in December.

In a lengthy statement released days after the incident, Carra described it following a vehicle operating a stop sign in Bridgeland that nearly hit her dog.
Carra said he was able to ‘tap’ the bumper of the vehicle with his foot, which he says prompted the driver to reverse and the two people inside verbally accosted him .
The adviser claimed the driver of the vehicle physically assaulted him after a verbal altercation.
The case was adjourned until September 15.
