Chad Kelly wants another chance in the NFL

Chad Kelly, nephew of Buffalo Bills legend and Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, had a footballing background.

Off-court troubles hampered his collegiate career in the pros.

But things are looking up for the 28-year-old.

The journeyman quarterback played in the Canadian Football League in 2022. It had one hell of a good ending.

He came off the bench in the CFL Championship Game to lead the Toronto Argonauts to a 24-23 win. He completed four of six passes for 43 yards and rushed twice for 21 yards.

Kelly has been out of the NFL since 2020. He retired from football and spent time as an offensive coach at East Mississippi Community College (Last Chance U).

With that title in his back pocket, Kelly hinted that he wanted another shot at the NFL. Or at least in the United States.

The Premier League is his obvious choice. But if someone offers an opportunity to get into the XFL or USFL, Kelly says he’ll listen to those offers as well.

“I was born to want to play in the NFL,” Kelly told the New York Post. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve wanted to see Uncle Jim’s manuals. As a young kid, I was blessed with the ability to throw the ball 71 yards. At 12 or 13, I could dissect the mechanics defense.

Kelly was selected by the Denver Broncos with the final pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. During his sophomore season, Kelly was arrested in October 2018 for criminal trespassing and quickly cut by the Broncos.

This incident happened when current Bills passer Von Miller was hosting a Halloween party. This prompted Kelly’s release from the Broncos.

The QB also noted the regrets he felt about these issues.

“I really regret a lot about the decisions I made and the self-sabotage, but I grew out of it. If they don’t feel my sincerity in my voice and presence, they may still see me as the same as a kid when I acted like an idiot,” Kelly said. It’s not who I am, who I want to be, or what name I want to be known as. I’m a different person.

After Kelly was released by the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, Jim Kelly’s former teammate at Buffalo, Frank Reich, was then the Colts’ coach.

Maybe his next move in the NFL since came with the Bills. Buffalo never signed him, but the Bills held a practice session with him, according to a January 2021 report.

For the real question now: Should Buffalo be the team that offers him a chance?

The bare minimum, 2023 is a better option than before.

Back then, Josh Allen wasn’t where he is today. He is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. When Allen fights? Nobody shoots Kelly.

Additionally, Brandon Beane will be looking for cheaper alternatives in his roster. Allen’s replacements, Case Keenum and Matt Barkley, are also on standby as free agents.

Kelly on a minimal deal with the practice squad? Maybe, maybe not.

That means Beane’s priority is getting this duo back…the affordable kind, rather than Kelly. $w
