But Caroline already had a boyfriend. A change in their relationship occurred in February 2012 when Caroline and Robert wandered into a CVS. “I needed earplugs and Caroline needed feminine hygiene products, and we didn’t have a car, so we walked,” Robert said. The 25-minute ride took place along a roaring freeway in Orlando, Florida, where they were participating in regional mock trials.

But back in Princeton, when he told her he felt a spark and asked if she had one too, she said no. “I was in my first serious relationship and I didn’t really understand how you could have feelings for two people at the same time,” she said.

At the beginning of his freshman year, they were a couple. But it wasn’t until the spring of 2013, when Caroline returned to China to study abroad, that she knew she had fallen irresistibly in love. Robert flew to China to visit her at the end of that semester.

In 2014 Caroline moved to Washington to be with her boyfriend Robert. Landing in New York would have been a smarter career move, she said. But taking the world by storm professionally no longer seemed like a good idea if it meant living apart from Robert. The couple married on May 25, 2019 at The Inn at Mount Vernon Farm, Sperryville, Va. Currently, they live in Washington, DC with her two cats.
