Kerr started working for AIB Catering in Ballsbridge in 1981 as a trainee chef/manager. For a long time he worked on oil rigs in the North Ocean, before working for Versa Food Administrations in Canada in 1984. Kerr coordinated the catering of a million people attending the visit of Pope John Paul II in Canada in 1985 at CNE Stadium Toronto, Ottawa Civic Centre, Crystal Beach Park and African Lion Safari while living in Canada.
Upon his return to Ireland in 1986, Kerr took up the position of Contributing Administrator at Jury’s Lodging Ballsbridge. From 1987 to 1989, he worked as a catering manager for Campbell Catering at UCC. He held various positions at Campbell Catering before working in sales and marketing at Contract Catering Company. In 1992, Kerr moved into the Campbell’s Bewley’s business and assumed the position of chef supervisor for Bewleys Oriental Bistro, Bewleys Diversifying and Bewleys Pastry kitchen.
In 1997, Kerr became head of advancement, Campbell Bewley Gathering, with the obligation regarding overseas enhancement of the Bewley brand in the assembled kingdom, United States and Japan.
Kerr opened PERK Coffee Shops in 1999. He acquired Fitzers, which owned 50% of PERK stock, in 2003 and sold the company to Insomnia in 2004.
