Big George Foreman: The miraculous story of the former and future world heavyweight champion debuted in theaters this weekend, but the sports flick couldn’t take on more popular contenders.
The George Foreman biopic exited the ring with an estimated haul of $3.0 million and finished in 11th place at the box office, according to Comscore.
The film was released to 3,054 locations across North America, but only managed a per-screen average of $982.
Directed by George Tillman Jr. (The hate you give, men of honor), the film tells the true story of George Foreman, boxing champion turned preacher and entrepreneur. After growing up in poverty, Foreman channeled his anger to become an Olympic gold medalist and world heavyweight champion.

Broadway star Khris Davis plays Foreman. He is joined in the cast by Forest Whitaker, Jasmine Mathews, Sullivan Jones, John Magaro, Sam Trammell and Thread former Lawrence Gilliard Jr. and Sonja Sohn.
Sony Pictures’ faith-based studio drama Affirm Films has been embraced by audiences who gave it an A- CinemaScore, but the movie critics weren’t so nice.
The biopic currently has a disappointing 43% score on rotten tomatoesbased on 35 reviews.
“It’s a decent movie, but it’s kind of off the books. It doesn’t do anything cinematically to attract an audience,” Wilson Morales, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of BlackFilmAndTV.comsaid Sunday by telephone.
Morales also questioned the film’s promotional campaign.
“The marketing wasn’t as big as you would expect from an icon like George Foreman,” Morales added. “There didn’t seem to be a lot of buzz.”
The biopic has a reported production budget of $32 million. Unless moviegoers suddenly rush to see the film, it will lose money.
While Big George Foreman failed to sell tickets, The movie Super Mario Bros. continued to soar.
The pic based on the Nintendo video game once again topped the box office, grossing another $40 million. That pushed its four-week total to $490 million domestically. Worldwide, the film made a staggering total of $1.02 billion.
Elsewhere at the box office, Evil Dead Rise took second place after raking in an additional $12.2 million in its second weekend, Comscore reported.
Are you there God? It’s me, Margaretbased on Judy Blume’s 1970 book, opened in third place with $6.8 million.
John Wick: Chapter 4 finished fourth with $5 million in its sixth weekend. A re-release of the 1983 film Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi rounded out the top five with $4.69 million.
