New Delhi [India]March 6 (ANI): The All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Monday announced the Indian team that will compete in the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group I 2023, to be held in Uzbekistan from April 11.
The Indian team for this tennis competition will include Ankita Raina (241st in the world), Karman Kaur Thandi (268th in the world), Rutuja Bhosale (419th in the world), Sahaja Yamlapalli (454th in the world) and Vaidehi Chaudhari (268th in the world). No. 492), who are the top five Indian players in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
World number 618 Shrivalli Bhamidipaty will be the reserve player.
The Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup, is one of the most important international events in women’s tennis, bringing together some of the sport’s top-ranked stars from different nations, who compete as a team. The tournament is the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup.
The AITA Professional Selection Committee selected the team based on several factors, including the performance, physical condition and form of the players.

“The team comprises some of the finest tennis players in India, who have consistently played at the highest level in national and international tournaments. These players have demonstrated exceptional skill, talent and dedication to the sport,” said the ‘AITA, quoted by Olympics.com.
Shalini Thakur Chawla will serve as the non-playing skipper and Radhika Kanitkar will serve as the coach. Ajeeta Goel will be the team’s physio.
India will face China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and local team Uzbekistan in Group I of the 2023 Billie Jean King Asia/Oceania Cup.
The top two ranked teams in the group will qualify for the play-offs, which will take place in November this year and the bottom two teams will be relegated to the Asia/Oceania II group for 2024.
Last year, India finished third, behind China and Japan, in Group I of the Billie Jean King Asia/Oceania Cup last year. (ANI)
