After more than 40 years in the entertainment industry, Angela Bassett can soon call herself an Oscar winner.
On Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the 64-year-old actress will receive an honorary Oscar at this year’s Governors Awards, which will take place in November.
Bassett has already been nominated for two Oscars. Her first Best Actress nomination came in 1993 for her portrayal of Tina Turner in the biopic What’s love got to do with it.
Earlier this year, Bassett was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for 2022 Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverin which she played Queen Ramonda – mother of King T’Challa, who was portrayed by the late Chadwick Boseman.

Bassett’s fans and friends were disappointed when she didn’t win earlier this year.
Oscars presenter Michael B. Jordan offered words of support after the loss, saying, “Aunt, we love you.”
The film academy says it selected Bassett for the honorary Oscar because of his “transcendent performances.”
“The Academy’s Board of Governors is thrilled to honor four pioneers who transformed the film industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and moviegoers,” said Academy President Janet Yang. “Throughout her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting.”

Joining Bassett as honorees in November will be producer, writer and actor Mel Brooks; film editor Carol Littleton; and Michelle Satter, Founding Senior Director of Artist Programs at Sundance Institute.
According to the Academy, honorary awards mark “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, outstanding contributions to the state of the motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy”.
Brooks, who previously achieved EGOT status after winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award, also received Oscar nominations for screenwriting (1974’s Young Frankenstein) and Songwriting (1974 Blazing Saddles).
“Mel Brooks lights up our hearts with his humor, and his legacy has had a lasting impact on all facets of entertainment,” Yang said of the 96-year-old entertainer.
Meanwhile, Littleton is being honored for her work behind the scenes. “Carol Littleton’s career in film editing serves as a model for those who come after her,” Yang explained.
The 81-year-old editor received her first and only Oscar nomination for AND the extra-terrestrial, which she edited for director Steven Spielberg. She is also known for her work on films like Body heat, The Big Chill, Swimming in Cambodia, And The Manchu Candidate.
Satter will receive a separate honor, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which is given “to a person in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought honor to the industry.”
As founding senior director of the Sundance Institute’s inaugural feature film program, Satter has “played a vital role in the careers of countless filmmakers around the world,” Yang said.
The 96th annual Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
