Ethiopian Airlines has finalized preparations to launch direct flights to Karachi, Pakistan, 19 years after suspending services on the route.

The airline said in a statement that the new direct flight will begin on May 1, 2023.

The statement implied that the East African airline first served Karachi from July 1966 until December 1971, and resumed service from June 1993 until July 2004, when it suspended the route.

The airline stressed that the flight would be operated four times a week.

Mr. Mesfin Tasew, Group Managing Director (GCEO) of Ethiopian Airlines, welcomed the resumption of services to Karachi.

He said: “We are delighted to return to Karachi almost two decades after last serving the city. As Pakistan’s most populous city, Karachi will be a crucial gateway to Pakistan and the wider South Asian region.

“As the only flight connecting Pakistan with Africa, the planned service to Karachi will contribute significantly to the strengthening of diplomatic and economic relations between the two regions. It will also provide convenient air connectivity to the growing number of Pakistani investors in Africa as well as to tourists.

Karachi will be Ethiopian Airlines’ 37th destination in Asia.

Currently, Ethiopian serves over 145 domestic and international passenger and cargo destinations.
