Police say a shooting occurred Tuesday at a northeast DC funeral home, killing one man and injuring three others.
The incident happened shortly after the funeral of a victim of gun violence was completed at Stewart Funeral Home on Benning Road NE. Metropolitan Police Department chief Robert Contee provided details of the event at a press conference, saying several people standing outside the funeral home were shot by an unknown assailant.
According to Contee, a nearby officer heard the sound of gunfire and discovered that four adults had been shot.
Among them, a man lost his life, while the other three individuals suffered non-critical injuries, as confirmed by the police chief.
It appears the attacker specifically targeted several people who were present in the area after the funeral, but the motive for the attack remains unclear, according to Contee.
Contee said authorities have yet to determine the identity of the attacker and are currently interviewing witnesses as part of their investigation.
The police chief condemned the shooting as a bold act, especially since it took place at a funeral service for a victim of a March homicide. Contee expressed his disappointment, saying it’s disheartening that someone could be so callous as to target people attending funerals. He further revealed that the responding officer was stationed nearby at the request of the family, who were grieving during the funeral.
Numerous law enforcement personnel from the DC Police and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were observed in the vicinity.
This is a developing story that will be updated when more information becomes available.
